Heritage and Origin

Ghicha (or Gheecha) silk yarns are primarily produced in Bihar, Jharkhand and Chattisgarh. The silk is a by-product obtained during the production of traditional Tussar or Eri silk. The production of Ghicha silk involves a manual and laborious process - the threads from the cocoons need to be pulled out delicately by hand (hence the name Ghicha or Gheecha) and reeled manually. Due to this process, the silk yarns are shorter in length. Although manual reeling gives Ghicha silk a coarse characteristic, the finish is smooth and lustrous. Ghicha silk yarn is also used as a blend in other silks such as Katia silk or pure cotton. Ghicha silk sarees often depict hand-painted tribal art or the region’s rich flora and fauna which are brought alive using vibrant, lively colours.

Dark grey is mysterious and fascinating. It balances the formidable strength of black with the calming serenity of white. Heritage and Origin

Eri silk is indigenous to and deeply rooted in the traditions of Northeast India, particularly the states of Assam and Meghalaya. Eri derives its name from the Assamese word era, which means castor. Local, mountain-dwelling communities comprising generations of weavers, imbibe environment-friendly and ecologically-harmonious practices in the production of Eri silk. The process of producing the silk is a long one comprising a total of 45 days. Moreover, the yarn obtained from the cocoons is not in the form of unbroken threads. Due to this, the silk yarn is not reeled but spun like cotton or wool. Eri silk has a warming and cooling effect, thereby making it an ideal silk fabric for both winter and summer wear.

Heritage and Origin

Steeped in history and an ancient culture which is believed to date back to the Vedic period, Chanderi, a small town in Madhya Pradesh, is surrounded by lush hills, forests and lakes. It is also home to one of the most famous handloom clusters in India, where weaving has been a part of the town’s socioeconomic character for centuries. The eponymous Chanderi fabric, which is made from a mix of silk, cotton and zari, is unique for its translucence and sheer texture. Traditionally, motifs were inspired by the town’s surrounding natural beauty and incorporated elements such as animals & birds, flowers, heavenly bodies and even gold coins (asharfis). Chanderi sarees are made using a technique called tana-bana, or the warp and weft method.

The production of Chanderi fabric (including the motifs) has evolved with time. Till about 50 years ago, all handwoven fabrics had soft, natural hues and muted tones. Since then, weavers have incorporated vibrant colours and vivid combinations in their looms. Katan silk is a type of fabric which is made by intertwining filaments of silk which gives it a firm and durable character. Katan originated in Persia and became popular in India during the Mughal reign.
