Linen is a versatile fabric which is made from the fibers of the flax plant. It is among the oldest-known fabrics which is said to have been discovered a few thousand years ago. The popularity of linen stems from its durability and breathability, the latter making it an ideal fabric for summer wear. One of the key advantages associated with organic linen production is its low usage of pesticides, artificial fertilizers and water; moreover, the entire flax plant can be used, resulting in zero wastage. Untreated linen (which has not been dyed) is completely biodegradable. Since the harvesting of flax plants is a difficult process involving meticulous techniques, pure linen is an expensive textile to produce. The art of hand block-printing has been an intrinsic part of Indian culture for centuries. It requires high precision and skill which takes master craftsmen several years, even decades, to perfect. Hand block-printing uses a mix of natural and commercial dyes to minimize the environmental impact and maintain the vibrancy of colours.
